What is a loft?

Lofts are often the result of imaginative design applied in order to differentiate from traditional spaces.

A loft can defined as*:

  • Large open space with high ceilings and big windows; typically found in former commercial buildings that were converted to residential.
  • A living space not partitioned into rooms, or a small space built above a larger room.
  • A floor consisting of a large, un-partitioned space over a factory, warehouse or other commercial space.

Why live in a loft?

Well, for many of the same reasons that you would live in a condo. However, there are a number of distinctive characteristics that really make lofts a preferred choice for home buyers.

The principles of loft design rely on open layouts, large windows, and unique finishes. These homes often feature floor to ceiling windows, 10-14 foot (or higher) ceilings and open concept living areas. Suiting lovers of modern and minimalist design, lofts exude an effortless, elegant style and due to the sense of freedom generated by wide open spaces, residents cite a feeling of escape that no traditional apartment or condo can provide.
